Comfort, value, and style are the core of what goes into denim at FabKids. In 2022, I gave the denim assortment a push forward to bring the brand up to date in fabrics, washes, silhouettes, and even branded hardware with current finishes. The assortment consisted of thin, super-stretch denim, featuring one pull-on jegging style and one fitted trucker jacket. Knowing the market had moved on from this as the denim staple of circa 2012, it was time for newness.
I started by getting out into stores and looking at the market offerings for silhouettes and fabrication. I reached out to the denim vendor and sent them swatches for heavier weight denim—both in stretch and rigid fabrication. Meanwhile, I also designed the brand's first logo hardware and collected examples of current finishes. Once the team landed our new core denim fabrics, I worked with the denim vendor to develop a wide range of wash targets, which were named and saved for easy future use.
The new assortment consisted of mid-rise straight leg, mid-rise bootcut, and an oversized rigid trucker jacket, while also maintaining the jegging offering. As the market changed, this time so did we. We added in a high-rise flare, high-rise wide leg, and cargo styles, along with more trucker jackets and dresses.
Customer acceptance was high, with the best-selling pant style being our bleach-washed high-rise wide leg cargo.
